Bloemaert baseert het schilderij hiernaast op deze gravure die hij drie jaar eerder ontwierp. Van links naar rechts zien we Augustinus, Hieronymus, Gregorius en Ambrosius, de vier kerkvaders. Hij brengt op het schilderij enkele veranderingen aan, zoals de engeltjes boven het altaar. Kerkvader Augustinus, links, draagt een mantel die geïnspireerd is op de koorkap van de vijftiende-eeuwse Utrechtse bisschop David van Bourgondië. Deze koorkap is te zien in de vitrine naast het schilderij.
