Deze voorstelling van Christus vormt oorspronkelijk het rechterluik van een tweeluik. Op het verdwenen linkerluik is Maria afgebeeld. De figuren zijn als portretten weergegeven tegen een egaal donkere achtergrond. Dit maakt het tweeluik zeer geschikt voor privédevotie. Het origineel is van de hand van de Antwerpse schilder Quinten Massijs (ca. 1465/1466-1530). Mogelijk betreft het een kopie uit de werkplaats van deze kunstenaar of van zijn zoon, Jan Massijs (ca. 1509-1575), die het atelier van zijn vader na diens dood voortzet.
