Dominicus
Meester van de Magdalena-legende, ca. 1360

De orde van de dominicanen of predikheren is in 1215 opgericht door de Spaanse priester Dominicus Guzmán. De geestelijken moeten ervoor zorgen dat de leer en de regels van de katholieke kerk beter verspreid gaan worden. Tegelijkertijd moeten zij ketterse ideeën bestrijden. Al in 1216 wordt de nieuwe orde officieel goedgekeurd door de paus. Zestien jaar later opent het eerste dominicanerklooster in Nederland haar deuren. De straatnaam Predikherenkerkhof in de Utrechtse binnenstad verwijst daar nog altijd naar.

Notes
Op onbekend tijdstip is aan de onderzijde van het paneel een nieuw plankje van 7 x 27 cm aangezet en beschilderd. Afkomstig uit hetzelfde altaarstuk als het paneel met de H. Laurentius (Boedapest, Szépmüvészeti Múzeum, inv. nr. 15, afm. 57 x 27 cm; afgebeeld in San Diego 1997, fig. 36). Andere stukken van de Italiaanse Meester van de Magdalena-legende bevinden zich in onder meer in:
- Fragment met de Communie van Maria Magdalena, Budapest, Museum of Fine Arts
- Fragment met Magdalena die de voeten van Christus kust, Siena, Pinacoteca Nazionale
- Opwekking van Lazarus, Rome, Pinacoteca Vaticana
