De eerste lijdensfase die Christus in zijn jeugd moest ondervinden, was kort na zijn geboorte toen koning Herodus uit angst voor de nieuwe koning, gelastte alle jonge kinderen te doden, zoals op de houtsnede wordt weergegeven. Op de rechterbladzijde staat een korte meditatie: `o mijn ziel, ziet nu hoe dit kleine kindje meteen al vervolgd wordt en als een beklagenswaardige balling uit het land verjaagd wordt'.
