Muziek in de middeleeuwen

Middeleeuwse muziek ontstaat vanuit de katholieke eredienst. Aanvankelijk is er nog geen muzieknotatie bij de liturgische teksten en moet iedereen de melodieën zelf onthouden. Voor de dagelijkse gezangen is dat geen probleem, maar het is lastig voor melodieën bestemd voor specifieke feestdagen.
Rond de tweede helft van de negende eeuw ontstaat er een muzieknotatie in zogenaamde neumentekens. Neumen dienen als geheugensteun bij de melodie. In de loop van de tijd worden er meer dan veertig accenten ontwikkeld. Deze vitrines tonen muzieknotaties uit de collectie van het museum.
