De geestelijke pelgrimage is ook na de zestiende eeuw een geliefd thema, zoals in het reisverhaal van John Bunyan. Tijdens een verblijf in de gevangenis publiceert hij in 1678 zijn allegorie The pilgrim’s progress, gebaseerd op zijn eigen spirituele ontwikkeling.
