De Bijbel is in de middeleeuwen het meest gelezen boek. Eerst alleen in het Latijn, later komen er edities in verschillende volkstalen. De eerste in het Nederlands gedrukte Bijbel verschijnt in 1477 en wordt in Delft vervaardigd (links in de vitrine), maar is onvolledig. De eerste volledige Bijbel in de volkstaal ontstaat in 1479 in Keulen (midden), geschreven in Duitse dialecten en geïllustreerd met meer dan honderd houtsneden. Deze zogenaamde Keulse Bijbel heeft generaties lang zowel reformatorische als katholieke bijbelversies beïnvloed.
