Tronende Maria met Kind, engelen en heiligen
Omgeving van Duccio di Buoninsegna
Toegeschreven aan de Meester van Città di Castello, 1320-1350

De als keizerin tronende Moeder Gods, één van de hoofdtypen in Byzantium, krijgt een westers evenbeeld in de tronende Maria met engelen en heiligen. Het purperen keizerlijke kleed wordt vervangen door een hemelsblauwe mantel. De tronende Moeder Gods verwijst naar haar majesteit. Maria is op haar beurt de zetel voor haar Zoon. De oudste voorstellingen komen voor in de catacomben, waar het Kind op de schoot van zijn Moeder de geschenken van de drie magiërs in ontvangst neemt. In de Byzantijnse wereld zitten Moeder en Kind frontaal naar voren gericht, maar de Italiaanse meesters benadrukken juist meer speelsheid. Christus zit losjes op de knie van Maria en richt zich tot de heilige voorsprekers en de engelen.

De afgebeelde heiligen zijn Franciscus, Agnes (met lam) en Clara.
Notes
Het paneel vormde oorspronkelijk met Kruisiging met meerdere figuren (ABM s2) een diptiek. Ingezet in latere omlijsting.
