Arent de Gelder schildert regelmatig historiestukken zonder dat hij duidelijke aanwijzingen omtrent de identiteit van de afgebeelde persoon geeft. Zodoende is vaak onduidelijk welke bijbelpassage is afgebeeld. Vermoedelijk schilderde hij hier de zegening van Tobias door Edna, de moeder van zijn vrouw Sara. Sara kijkt met haar vader Raguel naar de zegening. Gelder is Rembrandts laatste leerling. Hij blijft tot in de achttiende eeuw in de stijl van zijn leermeester werken.
