Iedereen lijkt in dit schilderij te vechten om een pluk hooi. De Antwerpse Gillis Mostaert uit forse kritiek op het gebrek aan leiderschap van de katholieke kerk. Verspreid over het schilderij zien we de uitwassen hiervan verbeeld in de zeven hoofdzonden: vraatzucht, luiheid, afgunst, gierigheid, hoogmoed, toorn en onkuisheid. ‘’t Is al hooi’ betekent in de zestiende eeuw: ‘het is allemaal waardeloos, bedrog’. In de tijd dat Mostaert dit werk schilderde, was Antwerpen het belangrijkste bolwerk van de protestanten. Juist hier was de Beeldenstorm in 1566 het hevigst. Elf jaar later kwam de macht daadwerkelijk in protestantse handen, tot de stad in 1585 weer werd ingenomen door de Spanjaarden.

Description
Allegorische voorstelling van de geestelijke en wereldlijke misbruiken; in de verschillende figuren en groepen verspreid over het paneel zijn de zeven hoofdzonden verwerkt.
Notes
Belangrijke elementen uit de compositie worden teruggevonden in een grisailleschildering met hetzelfde thema toegeschreven aan het atelier van Gillis Mostaert (Parijs, Musée du Louvre, inv. nr. MNR 399) en in een Brussels wandtapijt uit ca. 1550 (Madrid, Patrimonio Nacional, afb. in Utrecht 1981-1, p. 18, afb. 8). Hierbij is de hooiwagen weergegeven in een glazen wereldbol die wankelend voortdrijft in een zee vol duivelse monsters, een enscenering die waarschijnlijk teruggaat op een voorbeeld van Jeroen Bosch.
