Als jonge kapelaan te Enschede wordt Ariëns (1860-1928) getroffen door de sociale wantoestanden onder textielarbeiders. Hij sticht in 1889 voor de Twentse textielarbeiders een aparte vakorganisatie, een initiatief waarin hij zijn geloofsgenoten ver vooruit is. Ook is hij de grote man van de drankbestrijding. Het beeldje is in een aantal exemplaren afgegoten in opdracht van het R.K. Werkliedenverbond, in welks verenigingsgebouwen het geplaatst werd.
